This year in January the National Soccer Coaches Assocaition of America named three Men's Soccer players to their All-America team. This was the first time a Golden Eagle was named to any such team. We were then informed that one of those atheletes, Gabriel Viana, was named the National Junior College Scholar All American Player of the Year! This is the first time any athlete from our district was recognized by their sports national organization as a scholar player of the year. A ring ceremony was held this last Wednesday the 13th of May, to celebrate their accomplishments.
Sylas Moura, a sophomore, was named to the regional as well as national All-America team. Sylas led the State of California's two year schools in goals this year with 24. While he had several offers to transfer this year Sylas, an international student from Natal, Brazil, will complete his degree at West Hills College before transfering in the Spring of 2016.
Kalvin Conley, a sophomore, was recruited from Hanford West High School and was a fundamental part of the Eagles success for the past two years starting in over 90% of all the matches during his two years as a Golden Eagle. This year Calvin was voted by his teammates to lead the team as the captain. Kalvin is a President Scholar and was named to the National Scholars All-American team with a GPA of 3.87. Kalvin will graduate from West Hills College Lemoore this week but will continue his studies and soccer career at Cal State East Bay in the Fall.
Gabriel Viana is a sophomore, from Rio de Janero, Braizil. Gabriel met with coach Fortune at the end of the year in 2014 and decided to stay at school in the Summer session to work on his English and take some classes as well as continue training for the 2014 season. He worked relentlessly on an off the field earning a 3.98 GPA and starting nearly every match for the Golden Eagles. His success and that of the Golden Eagles in 2014 was enough to earn him the title Scholar Player of the Year for Junior Colleges nationwide. Gabriel's goal from the beginng was to earn his degree at West Hills College Lemoore and he will do that at the end of the Fall in 2015. From there he plans on transfering and continuing to play soccer.
