Golden Eagles close inaugural women’s wrestling season with 13th place finish at State Championships
FRESNO – The future looks bright for the Lemoore College women's wrestling program.
Led by a trio of Esperanza Ortiz Cadena (5th place), Destiny Barnes (5th place), and Sage Reyes (7th place), the Golden Eagles totaled 51.5 points to finish in 13th place out of 19 teams in the program's first-ever trip to the 3C2A State Championships at Fresno City College on Saturday.
It was a long day of wrestling, especially for Ortiz Cadena. She competed in seven matches for the Golden Eagles, compiling a 5-2 record. She wrapped up her season with a win over Felizai Solomua of Cerritos College, earning a 10-0 technical fall in the fifth-place final of the 160-pound weight class.
Barnes went 4-2 at the state tournament and defeated Rawni Self from Santa Rosa Junior College by fall at the 1:27 mark for fifth place in the 235-pound division.
Reyes was 3-2 on the day, bringing home a seventh-place medal at 145 pounds. She won the seventh-place final by fall (1:09), defeating Haley Rivera of Cerritos.
It was an impressive first season for the Lemoore women's wrestling team, led by head coach Marcio Botelho.
